More safety with daytime running lights
Driving with daytime running light (DRL) – in many scandinavian countries an obligation for many decades, in Germany rocommended since 2005. Numerous studies have proven, that cars with DRL are seen faster and better. Thanks to DRL standing and moving cars can be better differnced from each other, road users can better estimate the distance to oncoming traffic and according to an EU study even over 50 percent of the accidents with seriously injured and deaths could be avoided by DRL!
Retrofit of DRLThe retrofit of DRL does not only increase the safety on road but it also saves money. The DRL is up to 75 percent more frugal than turned on low beam lights but it glows four times more instensive than parking lights. So you can save up to 0,15 litre gasoline on 100 km!
Many insurances also give a discount if you have mounted DRL at your car.
DRL is a safety relevant part, therefore the ECE standards have to be considered (Economic Comission for Europe) and while mounting you have to meet the ECE R87 requirements.
ULO DRLs meet fully the ECE (R87) requirements.
From 2011 there will be a regulation which ensures that all new passenger cars and vans have to be equipped with DRL. From 2012 the regulation is also valid for commercial vehicles.
Today DRL is already compulsory in many european contries.- Compulsory for DRL for entire year: Denmark, Estonia , Finland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Compulsory for DRL in winter: Lithuania (1st of November until 1st of March), Slovakia (15th of October until 15th of March).
- Advice for DRL: Germany, France, Switzerland
- Restricted compulsory for DRL: Portugal (only on highway IP5 from Vilar Formoso to Aveiro)
